Vira (warrior) is one of the other names of the herb, arjuna, according the Ayurvedic text, Bhava Prakash.  The meaning is that arjuna makes you strong like a warrior, emotionally, physically and spiritually. 

What is it that makes one a great warrior?  It is unshakable strength of heart in the face of great calamity.  Even in the face of great crisis, one is able to stand strong.  Without this quality of heart, one would run away from the battlefield.  Arjuna is well known both in modern herbology and in Ayurveda for its powerful ability to strengthen the heart.

How does Arjuna strengthen the heart?  In Sanskrit, the name "arjuna" literally means the vibration of "a" that never declines.  Vaidya Mishra explains that the sound, "a," signifies pure consciousness or intelligence in the Sanskrit language.  Arjuna somehow deeply imbibes the pure, divine intelligence of nature.  The vibration of this tree is very pure, and it maintains this vibration through thick and thin (it never declines). 

It is this character of the arjuna tree that makes it suitable for strengthening the heart.  The heart needs lots of "a" value (lots of connection to pure consciousness).  Arjuna not only enlivens more consciousness in the heart but it helps to maintain a lively connection between consciousness and the heart even when we are faced with emotional challenges.  In fact, arjuna helps both the physical and emotional heart to be strong. 

Arjuna makes the heart like a vira (warrior) by binding the reactive toxins specific to the heart and getting them out of the body.  It is also able to heal physical wounds in the heart (and is even used topically for brana, or wounds, in Ayurveda).  And as we have seen, it makes the heart resilient to emotional or vibrational stress by keeping the connection to consciousness alive and well.

Arjuna is a very wonderful support for us in a world that is full of battles. We are faced with seemingly insurmountable emotional challenges and must be strong emotionally, physically and spiritually to cope with them.  Arjuna makes us like warriors, able to face with confidence even our greatest fears.
