If your Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner determines that your liver is clean enough, your digestion is strong enough, and your body is balanced enough to handle bhumi amla in crude, powder form, then you will enjoy the full benefit of this powerful herb for the liver.
Bhumi amla is a rasayana for the liver. That means that it helps to remove imbalances and reverse aging in the liver. Because the liver is such an important organ, the whole body also gains the benefit of this cooling, nurturing and detoxifying herb.
Bhava Prakash calls bhumi amla also by the name, bhudhatri. Bhu means "earth"or "field," and dhatri is the Sanskrit name for someone who is not your mother, but who cares for you like a mother. Bhudhatri is a mothering influence that grows in a field. Though it is a plant, and not a human, bhudhatri acts like a mother to your liver. It nourishes the liver and it detoxifies it so that it will stay strong and healthy.
Whenever you take a crude herb in powder form like this, you get all the physical properties that come along with it. For example, bhumi amla has kashaya rasa (astringent taste) and hima virya (cold thermogenic property). It is also laghu (light) and ruksha (drying). All of these qualities, while good for pitta, can cause a vata imbalance. That is why Bhava Prakash says that bhumi amla is vatakritika (increasing vata).
If vata is a concern, it is better to find a different herb, or to use this herb in Herbal Memory Nectar Drops form. When the drops are used (which do not contain the physical herb—only the memory of the herb), then the vata increasing tendency of bhumi amla is significantly decreased.
Physical herbs require physical digestion. That means that the jataragni (the burner located in the stomach) must be clean and strong. If there is a lot of ama (partially digested food), or kledaka kapha (mucous) sitting in the stomach, the herb will not get digested properly and cannot benefit the system.
In fact, the partially digested bhumi amla (ama of bhumi amla) will confuse the body because the body will not know whether to get rid of it or to keep it. It will just sit around and clog up the channels.
The liver must also have some strength. The next major stage of digestion after the stomach is the liver. Though bhumi amla helps the liver, the liver must have some inherent strength to metabolize the herb if it is going to get any benefit from it. There are times when a mother's nourishing love cannot help much if a child is simply too sick.
Another caution when using this herb in crude form, is that it can cause the liver to dump a lot of toxins at once into the intestines. If there are too many toxins in the liver, and the person taking bhumi amla has not taken measures to slowly remove some of those toxins already, a large dose of bhumi amla can leach out too many toxins at once causing an overload on the colon and the kidneys.
In fact, modern research shows increased creatinine levels when using crude bhumi amla, indicating problems with the kidney. For this reason, we advise that you use this product only under the direct supervision of a Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner, who can avoid this kind of side-effect with proper use of the herb. We also recommend that you consult your physician before starting to use this herb.
This herb must be used with complete understanding, and in proper combination with good binders in the diet (like tapioca, barley and okra). Also, it must be used with other herbs to balance and promote its efficiency. For this reason we do not recommend that you use this herb on your own.
Your Shaka Vansya Ayurveda practitioner may also consider Bhumi Amla Herbal Memory Nectar for you, because it has a much less dramatic detoxifying effect on the liver.
