Gokshura is a valuable herb for the genitourinary tract and is especially helpful for men. It has a balanced amount of soma (cooling, lunar energy) and agni (warming solar energy), and is able to nourish all of the seven dhatus (tissues) of the body, especially shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue).
The name gokshura literally means "cow's hoof" in Sanskrit because the fruits look like little hooves. This herb is especially good for detoxifying the bladder and genitourinary tract (basti shodhana), according to Bhava Prakash.
Gokshura is an unassuming little spreading weed in India. Why does Ayurveda pay attention to this little plant?
First of all, gokshura has lots of soma. According to the ancient texts, gokshura has madura rasa (sweet taste), madura vipak (sweet post-digestive effect) and sheetala virya (cooling quantum thermogenic factor). It even grows during the rainy season when there is lots of soma in the environment. This means that gokshura is good for the pitta physiology and is not going to cause problems if there is amavisha in the body.
However, gokshura is not just pure soma. Gokshura is classified by Bhava Prakash as a dipana herb as well. That means that, unlike most soma-rich plants, gokshura actually increases metabolism (agni). The dhatu agnis (which transform one dhatu, or tissue, into another) are gently stimulated by gokshura. This makes gokshura a very helpful plant for building up the tissues.
When the cooling, sweet influence of soma from this plant is taken up by the chain of tissue transformation in the body, it gets fully transformed into healthy tissues. The nourishment of soma in the plant comes with a dipana (flame enhancing) quality built-in. As a result, there is a much greater chance that the soma will be able to be used by the tissues to build them up.
If there was no dipana quality, the soma might turn to ama (partially digested material) in a body with low agni. If you have soma, with no agni to transform the soma then it is as good as useless. Think of a gasoline engine without a spark plug. The gas may be there but without the spark it is completely useless for moving the car.
The whole genitourinary tract is governed by apana vata (the downward flow of prana in the body). In modern times, and even in ancient times, apana vata is an easy dosha to get imbalanced. Constipation, menstrual problems, prostate issues, hemorrhoids, bladder infections and slow urination all are symptoms of imbalanced apana vata.
Gokshura balances apana vata by giving a lot of soma (nourishment). Organs and tissues that have become dry from an overload of acidic toxins become more normal when the nourishing influence of soma is available.
Gokshura also balances apana vata by removing any build-up of toxins or blocks of flow in the organs governed by apana vata. In fact, Bhava Prakash even states that gokshura is ashmarihara (helpful for preventing the formation of kidney stones).
Gokshura cleans the whole genitourinary tract from both physical and vibrational toxins. This cleans the nadis (vibrational channels) and shrotas (physical channels) so that used prana can easily flow out of the body in the way that it should.
As we have seen, gokshura has lots of soma, along with a dipana (flame enhancing) property. This ability of gokshura to deliver soma to the tissue level along with its ability to transform that soma into healthy tissue is what makes gokshura a bringhana herb (an herb that nourishes and increases all seven dhatus). This gives physical stamina, which is why Bhava Prakash describes gokshura as being balakrit (increasing stamina).
In addition, gokshura is especially good at forming high-quality shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue). For this reason, the texts call it a vrishya herb (enhancing the quality of shukra). The value of this is two-fold. Enhancing the shukra dhatu supports sexual function, and enhancing shukra dhatu supports the production of ojas.
Ojas is the semi-vibrational material which is the finest product of metabolism, according to Ayurveda. It is formed when the sukshma bhag (subtlest fraction of shukra dhatu) gets transformed into ojas. Gokshura enhances the production of both the sthula bhag (gross fraction) and sukshma bhag (subtle fraction) of shukra, which provides more raw material for making ojas.
Good levels of ojas in the body help boost immunity, as well as give physical, mental, emotional and spiritual strength.
The advantage of taking gokshura in the form of these Herbal Memory Nectar drops, is that the essence of the plant is absorbed immediately through the mucous membranes. When you take one or two drops in one or two liters of neutral pH spring water and sip throughout the day, the prabhavas (special qualities) of gokshura are absorbed directly into the blood and travel to the tissues right away.
When you take the crude herb in powder form, you have to wait for the herb to be digested, processed by the liver, and to travel sequentially through all seven layers of transformation before it reaches shukra dhatu. With the Herbal Memory Nectar, the essence of the herb travels immediately to all the seven tissues.
The physical properties of gokshura are not contained in the Herbal Memory Nectar, but the dipana quality is delivered right away to jump start metabolism in all the tissues. This is very helpful when someone has low agni.
If digestion is too low, the crude herb may not get processed well by the stomach and liver, and may never reach the tissues to stimulate the agnis there. Vaidya Mishra's alternate delivery method allows the herb to stimulate the dhatu agnis even if the jataragni (stomach) and panchabhutagnis (liver) are not working well.
In addition, the Herbal Memory Nectar delivers all of the other prabhavas (special properties of the herb) without having to go through the digestive process. For example, the balakrit prabhava (increasing physical and sexual stamina), the bastishodhana prabhava (cleaning the bladder and genitourinary tract), the vrishya prabhava (increasing the quality of shukra dhatu), the bringhana prabhava (increasing the fullness of all the dhatus), and the pushtidas prabhava (giving overall nourishment) all are delivered to their targets in the physiology without delay.
In addition, the ashmarihara prabhava (prevention of kidney stones) and krichahridaroganut prabhava (helping to support the heart) are also available right away.
For the modern physiology, which commonly has weak digestion and metabolism, Vaidya Mishra's Herbal Memory Nectars are a very effective means of delivering the herbs and getting the benefits of those herbs while bypassing the digestive system.
