Ayurveda has understood the role and relationship between pre-and pro-biotics for ages. It has been used in the SVA lineage to support and promote the full benefits of friendly bacteria(or pro-biotics) in the human gut. Pre-biotics are available in almost all food ingredients which have mucillage (taro root, okra, arrow root, marshmallow root, slippery elm, etc). Modern science now understands that there is a specific chemical called Inulin which supports and promots the growth of friendly bacteria by serving as their nutrition. In this particular Nectar Formula Vaidya Mishra has put: Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm, along with Cumin, Cinnamon, Fennel, Coriander, Ginger, to support and promote the friendly environment of the gut. Prebiotics help and promote the rapid growth of friendly bacteria which helps to digest yogurt, buttermilk (fresh home made) faster, so that semi-digested material from food does not create a bad acidic environment for friendly bacteria.
Pre-biotics constitute food for pro-biotic micro-organisms in the gut. It is an ingredients with high levels of mucillage, which in their turn are high in Inulin and serve as ideal food for intestinal friendly bacteria.
Pro-biotic means a friendly bacteria culture contained in yogurt or pro-biotic capsules. These friendly bacteria help keep the intestines healthy, they help us break down certain foods so we can more readily use them, and they provide micro-nutrients that we need.
The best pro-biotic yogurt cultures are Pavel (on the West Coast) and Natren (on the East Coast). According to Ayurveda, yogurt has is guru (heavy) so you have to use it with caution when your agni (disgestion) is low. This is the reason why yogurt is eaten only at lunch when agni is at it's peak. If you eat it when agni is low, you create ama (partially digest material) of the yogurt which is not helpful. If you have chronically low agni, yogurt should be used only in very small amounts.
Pro-biotic capsules may be able to get around this problem of yogurt's heaviness, but you have to be careful not to overdose on them as well. If the bacteria you ingest are dead or if they die in the intestines the dead bodies create aflatoxins. And if you consume more than you need not all of them can survive, resulting in the same problem.
Whether you use capsules or live yogurt, it important not to overwhelm the system. Start as low as 1 to 5 dilution for lassi (yogurt and water smoothie) at lunch and build up if and when the digestion improves. Cut back if you are feeling heavy from it. Same goes with capsules, build up slowly and only to the degree that your body can handle it. If you notice skin reactions or other toxin reactions from the capsules cut back or stop for a while.
This pre-biotic nectar is a very subtle formula that helps create a favorable environment for friendly bacteria to grow. It gets you ready for pro-biotics. This will help a lot to prevent the production of aflatoxins when too many bacteria die in the intestines. The pro-biotic yogurt itself is not enough for health, it has to be welcomed by the body and begin to thrive in order to get the benefit.
