Manjistha is a very famous Ayurvedic herb. It is useful in reducing auto-immune reactions to toxins in the blood, muscle and other tissues.
Toxicity in the blood and muscle can come from many sources. It can come from overexposure to xenobiotics (garavisha). It can come from poor digestion and metabolism. This result in amavisha (reactive toxins generated from partially digested food). It can come from unhealthy emotions. Or it can come from detoxification of the liver or the deep tissues.
Normally, the liver protects the body from toxins. It filters the blood and catches any toxins, so that they do not continue into the bloodstream or other tissues.
If the liver is overwhelmed by toxins, or if the liver is being detoxified too quickly, the blood and other tissues will get flooded with toxins, for which they have very little defense. The acidic and highly reactive toxins burn the tissues and create inflammation, sometimes causing auto-immune problems.
Manjistha is able to penetrate into the tissues where the reactive toxins are, bind them and pacify their reactive nature. Manjistha is like a clean-up crew when there is a big oil spill in the ocean.
Vaidya Mishra sells manjistha in two forms: as a herbal memory nectar and as a powder. The nectar sold here is especially good for people who have problems with digestion and metabolism, which is very common in the world today.
Ironically, the people who tend to need manjistha are often the ones that cannot digest it. Toxins in the blood are often the result of a long-term problem of high pitta / low agni. In this condition, there is a lot of acid in the body, but digestion is very weak.
If manjistha were given in powder form, it might not get digested properly or metabolized so that it could reach the blood. For this reason, Vaidya Mishra has developed this Manjistha Herbal Memory Nectar to bypass the digestive and metabolic systems.
Only the most subtle essence of manjistha is contained in this formulation and it does not need to be digested. Instead, it is absorbed through the mucous membranes and travels almost immediately to the blood.
This makes this alternative delivery method for manjistha very useful when digestion is slow or the liver is full of toxins.
Manjistha is a famous Ayurvedic herb and is used by many vaidyas in herbal formulations. It is also somewhat difficult to grow. Supply is low and demand is high.
This would be fine, if price were the only consideration. Unfortunately, many vendors in India will try to substitute other red colored roots for manjistha and you have to be quite good at recognizing the difference.
For this reason, many manjistha products for sale today are not actually manjistha. Vaidya Mishra takes extra care to ensure that the manjistha he uses is the real thing, and not only that, but that it is pure and fresh too. Otherwise the effects of this herb will not be seen.
Manjistha is described thoroughly in the ancient Sanskrit texts, and Vaidya Mishra spends 30 minutes going through the description of manjistha in Bhava Prakash. You can learn about manjistha from the original Sanskrit here.
As a sample of what you will learn in that lecture, here are a few of the areas reported by Bhava Prakash to improve with the use of manjistha: swara (voice), varna (complexion), visha (toxin removal), shotha (inflammation), akshikarnaruk (ear and eye conditions), raktatisara (blood in diarrhea), kushta (skin problems), visarpa (herpes related symptoms), vrana (diabetic ulcers).
