Tulsi is noted in the Ayurvedic texts for its ability to bring light (dipani). It enlivens the spiritual light of consciousness (sattwa) and it ignites the flames of digestion and transformation in the body.
This divya aushadhi (divine herb) is sometimes called surasa in Sanskrit because it is "liked by the gods." There is a spiritual purity in the plant, which enlivens the same quality in us when we use it. This is why it is called holy basil.
The Sanskrit name, tulasi, means "beyond compare." This refers to its divine vibration, as well as to its many medicinal properties, as reported in the ancient Ayurvedic texts. It also goes by the Latin names, ocimum sanctum or ocimum tenuiflorum.
You can learn more about the properties of this plant in Vaidya Mishra's 23 minute MP3 lecture on tulsi.
The ancient story goes that a Rishi's daughter asked her father to describe the qualities of the most perfect man. When it came time for her marriage, she could not find anyone who fit the description.
Her father eventually told her that even the gods do not posses all of these great characteristics. Only one god, possesses them, Lord Vishnu.
Vishnu is said to be the source of everything; he is the field of pure consciousness itself. So the rishi's daughter set her mind on Vishnu, even though he was not available for marriage.
The steadfastness and purity of her intent to be united with God brought her great fullness and spiritual illumination. In the end, Vishnu turned her into the sacred tulsi plant, with abundant healing properties.
Whenever you use tulsi, you gain the benefit of tulsi's spiritual vibration, just as being in the presence of spiritual people enlivens that quality in you.
Vaidya Mishra has recorded a 23 minute audio lecture on tulsi, which is available for download as an MP3 file for 99¢.
In this lecture, you will learn the most important properties and uses of tulsi. You will hear a more detailed version of the story of tulsi and you will gain insight into its physical properties (gunas) and divine properties (prabhavas).
Don't miss the opportunity to delve deeply into the Ayurvedic knowledge of tulsi, as Vaidya Mishra translates and comments on verses of Bhava Prakash, one of the Sanskrit source texts describing this plant.
One caution when using tulsi in tablet form: it has ushna virya (heating thermogenic factor) and katuka rasa (pungent taste). It also has dipani prabhava (the special quality of increasing the digestive and other flames, or agnis, in the body).
When you take the physical herb (such as in tablet form) you get the most potent dose of the physical properties. When the herb is infused in water, the physical properties are less. When you take it in Herbal Memory Nectar form or Transdermal Cream form, the physical properties are almost absent (only the vibrational qualities remain).
Tulsi, in tablet form, can be a powerful herb to increase immunity (bhutaghni), to supply more prana to the heart (hridya), to decrease kapha and vata (kaphavatajit) and to simulate digestion (dipani). However, the heating quality of tulsi is also strongest in tablet form.

Whenever you use a divine herb like tulsi in tablet form, you must digest it in the stomach and process it in the liver before it is ready to be used by the body. If there are a lot of toxins in the liver, they can diminish the divine quality of tulsi, making it less effective in the body.
If you have toxins in the liver, it is better to use Vaidya Mishra's Tulsi Herbal Memory Nectar or Tulsi Transdermal Cream. These formulations bypass the liver and send the divine vibration of tulsi to all the cells of the body.
As important as having a clean liver, is the importance of using tulsi that is vibrationally pure. If the vibration of tulsi has been damaged due to exposure of negative vibrations where it was growing or stored, the tulsi will not be as effective.
This includes any exposure to chemicals or EMF, as well as to handling by people who are not living a sattwic (pure) life. The power of tulsi lies in its vibrational quality, and it can be compromised by many factors before the plant reaches you.
For this reason, Vaidya Mishra takes great care to use only the highest quality tulsi leaves and to store and handle them with care. Because of this extra care, you will benefit from the full energy of tulsi in these herbal tablets.
