Sandalwood, chandanam in Sanskrit, is one of the most cooling herbs known to Ayurveda.  The anciet text, Bhava Prakash describes it as ahladanam, or giving bliss, and you can feel this effect immediately when you smell real sandalwood.

There are many fakes among sandalwood soaps, oils and perfumes.  Because sandalwood is a very rare tree, which cannot be cultivated (it only grows in the wild), it is very expensive.  Add to this a very high demand for its amazing scent, and you can see why sandalwood is one of the most precious plants in the world.  As a result, many people try to imitate sandalwood through laboratory synthesis of its main ingredients. 

Unfortunately, when herbs are created sythetically, they never have the same subtle properties and spiritual quality that the real plant contains.  This is also true when harsh chemicals such as benzene or hexane are used to extract the essential oils from any plant.  Whenver chemicals are used, either to extract or to preserve, the prana of the plant is killed, rendering it virually useless.  The properties described in the Ayurvedic texts for the plant do not apply to essential oils extracted with chemicals, let alone to mock versions of essential oils derived in laboratories.

If you want the real effect of sandalwood, you have to use the real thing.  Vaidya Mishra is very picky about his sources of herbs, and if he does not harvest them himself, he always sends them for lab testing to be sure that no harsh chemicals were used before they reached him.  The sandalwood used in this soap is very pure, and very authentic.  This is why his sandalwood soap smells so divine.  It immediately gives that ahladanam, or blissful, effect described in Bhava Prakash, when you smell it. 

Most other sandalwood oils and soaps do not have the pure aroma of this sandalwood soap.  Most are made with synthetic oil or with oil extracted with benzene or hexane.  Synthetic sandalwood oil, when placed on the head, will often give red eyes almost immediately.  This is the body's reaction to the toxic effect of those synthetic chemicals.

Real sandalwood is also described in Bhava Prakash as vishanut, getting rid of amavisha and garavisha toxins, and pittanut, balancing pitta.

Use in the shower or bath, by the sink, or wherever you keep soap. You can use on the hands, the face, or the body.
